| HISTORY |
| |
Initially founded in 1891, this family operated enterprise
experienced renewed expansion when a fourth generation formed
of Max D'Amours and Lise Massé took the reins in 1991.
It was early, during the period of colonization, in 1891, that
Honoré Massé founded the company, which for the
past one hundred years has provided jobs and services for the
population of Saint-Hubert.
The local company was, in 1991, reborn as Industries
Massé et D'Amours. Manufacturers of lumber, laths and shingles
since its inception, by the late 50's its manufacturing activities
included wood and wire snow and sand fences. After having been
modernized in 1994, its principal sawmill burned down for the
third time in its history, on February 18, 2000. Three times,
in 1932, 1952 and February 2000, the sawmill was destroyed by
fire. Again for the third time it was rebuilt, equipped with the
latest machinery and back in operation by the first of September
of the same year. The commitment of its sound financial partners
has allowed the company to realize its goals of industrial development
in Saint-Hubert by rebuilding a more modern sawmill better adapted
to the company's needs.

True to its objectives, during that same year, it became the
leading manufacturer of wood and wire sand and snow fences. With
its know-how, and the installation, in 2000, of a new fence factory,
the company is today looking forward to being an innovator in
this sector. Since 1991, the number of employees and the annual
sales figures continue to increase. Even though the February,
2000 fire put a momentary halt to the owners efforts, they decided
to continue their work, which had already created over 30 jobs,
and to develop a local and regional business network. Furthermore,
the company has been recognized three times by Lower St. Lawrence
regional organizations for its efforts in local development and
its exportation initiative. The owners of the enterprise, Max D'Amour
and Lise Massé, have brought together a team of shareholders
who are interested in the development of the project; their two
sons, François and Pierre, Investissement Desjardins, Norampac
Division Cabano, Groupement forestier and agricole Taché,
and SADC from the MRC of Rivière-du-Loup.

Other financial partners are Investissement Québec, the
Caisse populaire de Saint-Hubert, the Center for Local Development,
the Canadian Bank of Development and the Fonds local de développement
de la FTQ. There were other important governmental contributors
that were valuable to the project's completion, such as the Minister
of Natural Resouces, Development Economic Canada, Human Resouces
Canada, the Minister of Industry and Commerce, and the National
Research Center of Canada. Mention must also be made of the generous
support from organizations such as the Municipality of Saint-Hubert,
CORPEX du Bas Saint-Laurent, and the contributions, in the form
of services, from the many local businesses as well as the dedication
of the employees who participated in the sawmill's reconstruction
in 2000.
